Ce week-end, alors que je feuilletais quelques livres de ma bibliothèque, en recherche de documentation pour mon blog, j'ai retrouvé "Believe". Il s'agit d'un livre grand format issu de la collaboration entre l'artiste Orlan et le designer Walter Van Beirendonck, offrant une réflexion visuelle autour des volumes du corps. En s'inspirant des implants de pommettes qu'Orlan arbore sur le front, Walter Van Beirendonck a paré ses modèles d'excroissances faciales.

Une page se tourne, c'est Devon Aoki, mannequin iconique de la fin des années 90. Je retourne en arrière avec le pressentiment d'avoir manqué quelque chose... C'est bien Alexander McQueen affublé de prothèses frontales...

Pas étonnant me lancerez-vous, surtout après avoir ressassé son défilé de cet hiver des milliers de fois. Sauf que le livre est paru en 1999, soit il y a 11 ans. Sauf qu'il est le modèle, et pas le designer ici. Sauf que ce livre est complètement oublié.

2 ans plus tard, Walter Van Beirendonck organise même une exposition à Anvers avec, comme thème central, le rapport au corps au travers de la culture et de la mode.

Finalement, la dernière collection hivernale de Mcqueen est un bel hommage à cet ouvrage, et la preuve que son cheminement à propos du corps et de ses volumes ne date pas d'hier. C'est également un bel hommage aux créateurs belges qui sont une source d'inspiration sur la scène mondiale. Et même s'ils ne sont pas tous vendus chez Bergdof Goodman, il est plaisant de voir qu'ils peuvent inspirer des poètes comme McQueen.

Last week-end, as I was looking through my books in hope for some material for my blog, I found "Believe". Result of the collaboration between designer Walter Van Beirendonck and artist Orlan, it's a photographic book which offers  visual thinking on body shapes. Taking inspiration on Orlan's forehead implants, Walter Van Beirendonck created a "face reshaping" on models.

After turning some pages, I see iconic model from the 90's Devon Aoki. Wait, I got the impression I missed something... some pages before this pic... Alexander McQueen with those facial protesis!

No big deal, he created this kind of make up for this winter show. Except the book was published in 1999, 11 years ago. Except McQueen is the model here, not the designer. Except nobody remembers this book.

2 years later, Walter Van Beirendonck even organised in Antwerp an exhibition on the relationship between the human and his body through culture and fashion.

Eventually it's a nice tribute to this wonderful book that McQueen offered last season. A proof that his fascination with the body and its volumes has been there for a very long time. It's also a tribute to belgian designers being internationally inspirationnal. And even if they aren't all retailed at Bergdof Goodman, it's good to see that they have an impact on poets like McQueen.
